renata-saleclAnxiety, Denial and Ignorance
in Times Dominated by Genetics and Neuroscience

Saturday 29 October 2016. 10:30 – 13:00
Carmelite Centre, Aungier Street, Dublin 2.

APPI invites you to a lecture and discussion with Slovenian philosopher, sociologist and legal theorist Renata Salecl.
Renata will discuss how advances in the biological sciences have opened up new ways to reflect on the nature of subjectivity. Genetics and neuroscience, on top of bringing new knowledge about our bodies, often incite anxieties and paranoia, while also giving rise to new forms of social control. With the help of psychoanalytic theory, this lecture will first look at the fantasies people create around genes and brains in their private lives and how today’s literature presents these fantasies. Second, it will analyze the fascination with DNA in the judicial system and the way movies and TV series contribute to the perception of the all powerlessness of forensic science. And, third, it will look at the way the desire to see the secret in the body goes hand in hand with new forms of denial and ignorance.

Renata Salecl is senior researcher at the Institute of Criminology, Faculty of Law at the University of Ljubljana, and holds a professorship at Birkbeck College, University of London. She has been a visiting professor at London School of Economics, lecturing on the topic of emotions and law. Every year she lectures at Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law (New York), on Psychoanalysis and Law, and Neuroscience. From 2012, she has been visiting professor at the Department of Social Science, Heath and Medicine at King’s College London. Her books have been translated into thirteen languages.
