As the recent APPI Congress testified, psychoanalysis, as theory or praxis, does not operate within a cultural vacuum but is shaped and influenced by developments in contemporary discourses, the backdrop of political contexts, and advances in technology. In a sense, psychoanalysis is or should always be in flux or certainly reflective of its own place within discourse and as Ian Parker concluded his keynote with, reflective of itself as a discourse. This reflexivity is important if psychoanalysis is to avoid stagnation and the solipsism of hermetic outputs, with psychoanalytic theory functioning as either a master or university discourse.
