Chris who died last October was a classmate of mine on the two year M. Sc. Course in St. Vincent’s Hospital 1988-1990. His acute but gently sardonic intelligence made him the perfect companion with whom to sail out for the first time into lacanian waters. Also his wide knowledge and love of Beckett’s work was always a pleasure to tap into. I know very few people who so keenly appreciated and enjoyed Beckett’s particular brand of humour.
The obituary which follows was delivered at his funeral service in Rathmichael. Those of us who were there will recall how his wife of many years, Una, also a colleague, put together an extraordinarily beautiful and true tribute to this remarkable man, a tribute which was a moving testimony to the long years of love between them.
