CORU Standards for Psychotherapy
The Association for Psychoanalysts and Psychotherapists in Ireland (APPI) is hosting the above Workshop.
This will be the first Workshop in a series of three which will invite psychoanalysts, psychotherapists, counsellors and allied mental health professionals to robustly argue for the maintenance of the current minimum standards for accreditation to qualify as a Psychotherapist, based on decades of affirmed clinical training.
In CORU’s Standards under Section on Professional Knowledge and Skills they state:
“be able to recognise and manage the dynamics of power and authority as experienced in the therapeutic relationship”
All the current accreditation bodies have vigorously argued for the insistence that trainee psychotherapists engage in a minimum of three years’ personal psychotherapy to qualify which provides them with the actual clinical skills having worked on themselves, and be ethically prepared to provide a safe and clinically sound service to service users. The word “analysand” is specific to training of psychoanalysts.
CORU have completely rejected the accreditation bodies’ insistence on undertaking personal psychotherapy which will ultimately lead to “danger” to the public. Furthermore Ireland would be the only country within the EU to not be in compliance with the European Federation of Psychotherapy.
