History

1993

The Association began life in 1993 as a learned society, informed in particular by the works of Sigmund Freud and Jacques Lacan. At that time its primary aim was to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and to encourage debate among its members.

1994

A year later, in 1994, this was incorporated officially as The Association for Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy in Ireland, or APPI, with its Primary Object, as set out in its Constitution, “to advance Freudian and Lacanian psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy. In particular, in keeping with the Freudian principle, this advancement shall remain centred on the personal analysis as the indispensable means by which the practice of psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy can be transmitted, studied and understood.

2016

In 2016, APPI became a constituent member organisation within the Psychoanalytic Section of the Irish Council for Psychotherapy and members of APPI, as well as being bound by the rules and ethics of APPI, are also subject to the ethical and training requirements of the ICP.
